What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in the popular diabetes drug Ozempic, first introduced to manage diabetes in 2012. Based on the earliest diabetes studies, researchers found that patients inadvertently lost significant weight, which further improved the negative effect of diabetes. Based on these promising findings, they almost immediately began researching semaglutide as a tool for obesity treatment. In 2017, the brand name Wegovy was first approved. The semaglutide offered at Vitality Bar is sourced from reputable compounding pharmacies and is carefully tested for safety and efficacy.

How does Semaglutide help with weight loss?

Semaglutide and other drugs in this class help with weight loss through multiple channels. First, patients experience reduced cravings for food, simply based on the balancing of blood sugar.. By preventing the peaks and valleys that we’ve grown used to,, patients tend to experience less impulsive eating and a lower appetite for snacks in general. Second, this medication slows gastric emptying. This means that any food/meals you eat will digest more slowly and you won’t feel hungry as often as you normally do. This also means that when you eat, you can typically expect to feel “full” more quickly than normal.  Researchers believe there may be additional benefits for weight loss and health that could possibly be identified in future studies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question? We’ve got answers.

Unfortunately, not everyone is a candidate for semaglutide weight loss programs.  A past history of intestinal issues, kidney disease, pancreatitis, or other uncontrolled chronic illnesses may be factors in the decision.  There is also a percentage of the population (about 10%) who are known as “non-responders”.  For these users, semaglutide never produces the desired effects, no matter the dosage. We can’t know if you’re a “non-responder” until after you have tried the medication for 2 months or more.  Once we have increased your dose to the recommended ranges without any significant results, we would discuss the possibility that semaglutide isn’t right for you.  MOST of our clients see great success - but all users should be aware of the fact that 1 in 10 patients won’t lose weight.

While we wish we could give everyone a straightforward answer to this question, it is entirely dependent on individual circumstances and behavior.. We have seen patients who only need to lose 10-15 pounds accomplish this within 4 to 6 weeks. For our clients with more significant weight loss goals, it may take several weeks just to achieve therapeutic effects.  Once we have achieved this, patients who follow our advice and dosing guidelines can see a healthy 1 to 2-pound per week weight loss, though these numbers can vary (more or less is possible).

Because our #1 goal is to keep you safe and comfortable, we require MONTHLY followup visits for anyone in our Semaglutide weight loss program. This means we will not refill your prescription each month without seeing you in person (or connecting with you via telephone in extenuating circumstances.). While we realize this may be inconvenient, it's a small price to pay to ensure that YOU and WE are comfortable with the treatment protocol.

The most common side effects reported by semaglutide patients are nausea, low energy, diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, gas/burping, and heartburn. Here at Vitality Bar, we have implemented a unique protocol allowing us to dose the medication at smaller intervals to assist your body’s tolerance. In our experience, not everyone can comfortably begin at the traditional starting dose, and sometimes the incremental increases can bring a sharp return of side effects. We’ll help you find the balance between results and feeling well enough to live your life comfortably! There are more serious risks, though the incidence is low. Your doctor will discuss potential complications with you in full at the time of your consultation.

Vitality Bar is one of the few options for medically supervised semaglutide with 2 local physicians on staff as our Medical Directors and providers. If you have questions about how your treatment is going, simply call our office at (715) 393-4012. If the doctor isn’t available, someone will take your message and they’ll call you back as scheduling allows. You can also email info@vitalitybarwi.com and the doctor can email or call you back, depending on your request.

If you’re possibly experiencing a medical emergency, do not wait for a response. Seek emergency treatment from your local healthcare system.

Just like any modality for weight loss, if you discontinue treatment and return  to your old lifestyle and eating habits, you will most likely see a rebound weight gaint. For many of our patients, getting the jumpstart on weight loss gives them the confidence to go to the gym, return to old hobbies, eat with more intention, etc. Plus, spending a significant period of time with a reduced appetite and changed eating habits can lead you to continue those habits into your post-semaglutide period. This is our goal for every patient who participates in our program. As you’re ready to transition to life after medication, we will counsel with you about nutrition, offer options for local resources for health and wellness plans, and encourage you to prioritize your healthy body.

Semaglutide has been studied for long-term use and has been found safe in patients who hydrate well, eat a balanced diet, and engage in regular exercise. Some patients with binge-eating disorders or other similar compulsive eating habits may choose long-term semaglutide treatment. We are here to support them through that process as well.

If you’ve decided you want more information or you’re ready to get started, the process is the same. Simply book a semaglutide weight loss initial visit/consultation through our booking platform or by calling our office during business hours.  CONSULTATIONS ARE ALWAYS FREE!  At your consultation, the  physician  will review your medical history, our protocol, the potential risks and side effects, and you can decide if you’d like to proceed. If you do, you can take home your first month’s medication at that same visit!
