How Red Light Therapy Works

When you expose your skin to a specific frequency of red light, it absorbs straight through your tissues and deep into your cells.  The mitochondria convert this red light into energy, thus “fueling” them to do their job more efficiently.  Some experts think this helps cells repair themselves and become healthier, thus spurring healing in skin and muscle.  

Red light therapy uses very low levels of heat.  The light will not hurt or burn the skin - in fact you may feel very little physical effect of a red light therapy treatment at all.  This is not the same type of light used in tanning beds and will not expose your tissues to damaging UV rays.

You’ll be in our private treatment room and can choose to wear whatever you feel comfortable in.  Keep in mind, the goal is to expose as much of your skin to the red light panels as possible.  Some users will choose to remove all clothing for their treatment - others may wear a swimsuit - and others may prefer shorts and a tank top.  

When done under medical supervision with high quality, fully-tested devices, there are no known side effects. Some low quality machines or at-home devices have malfunctioned and some patients have experienced burns. We fully researched the brand and selected a physician-designed system for maximal safety and efficacy.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ answer. Depending on your treatment goals, up to 3 times a week may be recommended. The general recommendation is once per week to maintain the general benefits of red light therapy.

If you are not well enough to stand supported for 30 minutes, the typical treatment protocol is probably not right for you. Chair therapy is a great alternative, though you may only absorb the light on the part of your body facing the panels if you cannot reposition yourself. Anyone who can sit upright has potential for benefit.
